Altenau is an officially recognised spa village in the Upper Harz at around 450 metres above sea level, nestled in the Oker valley in Landkreis Goslar. The quiet village sits in the heart of the Harz Nature Park and offers direct access to extensive walking trails — starting right at the edge of the village. Harz National Park is seven minutes away by car. Dogs are exempt from the resort tax in Altenau, making it particularly popular with dog owners. The surrounding area is peaceful, largely free from mass tourism, and offers fresh air and forest trails throughout the year.
